About this policy
SkinLens turns a selfie into a cosmetic skin reading, a personalized routine, and week-over-week progress tracking.
This Privacy Policy explains what information SkinLens (“we,” “us,” or “our,” the developer of the SkinLens app) collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to the SkinLens iOS app and the cloud services that support it.
By using SkinLens, you agree to the practices described here. SkinLens is a cosmetic and educational tool — not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition, and its readings are for appearance and skincare guidance only.
Information we collect
We collect only what SkinLens needs to give you a reading and keep the app working. Most of it stays on your device.
Your account
During onboarding you sign in with Apple or Google. We receive your email address, and your name if the provider shares it — nothing else. There is no password, and we never see your Apple or Google credentials. Apple's “Hide My Email” is fully supported: if you use it, we only ever hold the private relay address. Your email lets us keep your results tied to you and send you skin updates; you can delete it at any time in Settings → Account → Delete account.
Photos & skin analysis
When you take or upload a selfie, we detect and crop to your face, then analyze cosmetic skin attributes such as evenness, texture, pores, and shine. Face detection runs on your device. The skin analysis itself is performed securely on our servers, and the resulting scores, skin maps, and generated images are saved on your device.
Your skin profile
During onboarding you can tell us your skin type, sensitivity, main concern, and goals. This profile is stored on your device and sent alongside a scan so your routine can be tailored to you.
Skin Coach conversations
If you use Skin Coach, your messages and the relevant cosmetic context from your scan are sent to our secure cloud service to generate a reply. Skin Coach is cosmetic-only and refers anything medical to a professional.
Purchases & subscription
Subscriptions are processed by Apple. We receive your subscription status (for example, active or in trial) tied to a random app identifier. We never receive or store your card or payment details — Apple handles payment.
Usage & device data
To understand how features are used and keep the app stable, we collect pseudonymous analytics — app events, app version, device model, OS version, coarse region, and a random identifier — along with basic install and attribution data. This is not linked to your name or photos.
Notifications
Reminders (such as AM/PM check-ins) are scheduled locally on your device. SkinLens has no push-notification server, so these never leave your phone.
What we don't collect: no password, no card details, and no data beyond what's listed above. We do not access your contacts, precise GPS location, or Apple Health data.
How we use your information
We use the information above to:
- Create your skin reading, Glow Score, Skin Map, and personalized AM/PM routine.
- Power Skin Coach and written guidance in your report.
- Track your progress and show before/after comparisons over time.
- Unlock and manage your subscription.
- Keep your results tied to your account, and — if you chose to receive them when you signed in — email you about your skin plan, your results, and occasional product news. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link.
- Improve SkinLens through aggregate, pseudonymous analytics.
- Measure which campaigns bring people to the app.
- Send the local reminders you choose to enable.
- Keep the service secure and prevent abuse (for example, rate-limiting scans).
We do not use your information for third-party advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles from your photos.
Your photos, specifically
Your photos are the heart of SkinLens, so we hold them to a higher standard than anything else in the app.
- On-device first. Face detection and cropping run on your iPhone. Your selfie is sent to our processing providers only to generate your analysis, over an encrypted (HTTPS/TLS) connection.
- Not for training. We do not sell your photos, and our providers do not use them to train any models.
- Not identity. SkinLens does not run facial recognition to identify you. We measure cosmetic skin attributes — we are not matching your face against any database.
- You hold the copies. Your scans, scores, skin maps, and routines are stored on your device. Copies held by our providers to deliver a result are short-lived and expire automatically.
- You can remove them. Delete an individual scan in the app, or remove everything at once by deleting the app from your iPhone.
In plain terms: your face never becomes an ad profile, a training set, or a login. It's used to read your skin, then the result is yours to keep or delete.
Storage & retention
- On your device: scans, scores, skin maps, routines, quiz answers, streaks, and check-in photos are kept in the app's private storage. They remain until you delete them or delete the app.
- Processing copies: photos and generated images held by our cloud providers to produce your result are transient and expire automatically after processing.
- Subscription records: retained by Apple and our subscription-management provider under their own terms for as long as needed to manage billing and entitlements.
- Analytics: retained in pseudonymous form by our analytics providers under their standard retention periods.
- Your account email: kept until you delete your account, at which point it is erased from our systems.
Service providers
SkinLens relies on a small number of trusted service providers to run the app. Each processes data only on our behalf, under agreements that require them to protect it and use it solely to provide their service to us. By category, they help us:
- Distribute the app and process payments so you can subscribe — handled through the App Store, so we never see your card details.
- Manage and unlock your subscription across your devices.
- Securely process your scan on our servers to produce your reading and written guidance.
- Measure app usage and marketing performance in pseudonymous form, so we can improve SkinLens.
- Verify your sign-in with Apple or Google, and deliver the emails we send you.
We do not sell your personal information to any of them. We may also disclose information if required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service.
What we never do
- We never sell your personal information.
- We never use facial recognition to identify you.
- We never share your photos with advertisers or ad networks.
- We never post anything on your behalf.
- We never let our providers train on your data.
Your rights & choices
You are in control of your data. Because most of it lives on your device, some choices are as simple as a tap.
Access & delete
View and delete individual scans in the app, or delete everything by removing SkinLens from your iPhone.
Delete your account
Go to Settings → Account → Delete account. Your email is erased from our systems and all emails stop. (Your subscription is separate — cancel it in iOS Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions.)
Permissions
Turn camera, photo library, motion, and notification access on or off anytime in iOS Settings → SkinLens.
Tracking
iOS App Tracking Transparency lets you decline attribution tracking. You can also reset your advertising identifier in iOS Settings.
Marketing
In-app reminders are local and optional — disable notifications and none are scheduled. For email, you choose at sign-in whether to receive them; after that, use the unsubscribe link in any message, or delete your account to stop everything.
If you're in the EEA or UK (GDPR)
You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing of your personal data, and to data portability. We process data to provide the service you request (contract), with your consent (for example, camera access), and for our legitimate interest in improving and securing the app. You may withdraw consent at any time and have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
If you're in California (CCPA/CPRA)
You have the right to know what personal information we collect, to delete it, to correct it, and to opt out of its “sale” or “sharing.” We do not sell or share your personal information, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
To exercise any right, contact us using the details below and we'll respond within the timeframe the law requires.
Data security
We protect your information with encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), device-level storage inside the app's private sandbox, and access controls on our infrastructure. No method of transmission or storage is ever 100% secure, but we work to keep the data you trust us with safe and to hold it for as short a time as possible.
Children's privacy
SkinLens is not directed to children under 13, and you must meet the minimum age required in your region (and the age of majority to purchase a subscription) to use the app. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
International transfers
SkinLens is available worldwide, and our providers may process data in the United States and other countries where they operate. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards — such as standard contractual clauses — to protect your information when it crosses borders.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as SkinLens evolves. When we do, we'll revise the “Last updated” date at the top, and for material changes we'll surface a notice in the app. Your continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
